Marseille, the first Greek settlement in France, still bears many iconic architectural remnants of that ancient civilization. It’s also known for its classic architecture on the banks of the Mediterranean. Just think of the historic high street of Canebière in the old quarter leading to the Old Port. But France’s second-largest city, Europe’s cultural capital of 2013, is now also becoming a trendy destination with new trendy restaurants, sun-filled terrasses, malls and luxury hotels.
The hip hotel chain Mama Shelter, launched by ex-Club Med leader Serge Trigano, designer Philippe Starck and entrepreneur Cyril Aouizerate, sensed a good opportunity and set its eyes on the city for a new branch. Fancy Oli check in at the Mama Shelter Marseille for a last-minute weekend getaway.
Located just a 15-minute walk from downtown and the port, the hotel gives nothing away from its nondescript gray aluminum exterior. Discreet or not, it’s quickly become a hipster and boho landmark, helping repopulate a neighborhood that was still a no man’s land just a few years ago. As with other Mama Shelters, the rates are affordable, and the decor is simple yet original and welcoming.
As soon as you step into the lobby, the atmosphere sets right in. Across from the reception, various incongruous items ranging from t-shirts to polaroid cameras and condoms beckon you, and your wallet.
Behind doors on the left, meals are served in a large dining room with the looks of a canteen, though it comes with a bar and veranda. Philippe Starck’s touch here has an urban, tongue-in-cheek feel, with artsy inscriptions on the ceiling, kiddie floats hanging above the bar, foosball and a giant chessboard. Clients dance to a DJ’s mix late into the night on Fridays and Saturdays.
The two elevators that take you to your room are also equipped with a lexicon of popular marseillais terms. Oli challenges you to use the word “cagole” (skank) in a conversation during your stay in Marseille, paired with the appropriate accent.
The Mama brunch has a reputation as the best in the city. And to be true, it’s rather delicious and generous. You have a very large choice of the sweet and the savory, plus wonderfully fresh squeezed juices. The dessert counter just might blow your mind, with about 30 homemade desserts. You’ll have to forget about your diet for a moment, it’s just too good to pass up. The clientele is chic, and includes both stars and the more relaxed variety. It’s just the place to be on a lazy Sunday.

Mama Shelter Marseille is an excellent, friendly locale that’s also affordable. Forget the pool or the spa. You’re here to have a good time with friends, old or new. Fancy Oli gives his stamp of approval, eyes closed.
